20-year-old man charged after alleged abduction, vehicle pursuit from New Kent to York counties

NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 20-year-old Newport News man has been arrested after he abducted a person and was involved in a vehicle pursuit by the New Kent County Sheriff’s Office on Interstate 64.

At around 1:30 a.m. on Monday, May 19, a deputy with the New Kent County Sheriff’s Office was monitoring I-64 east near mile marker 11, the Talleysville exit, when he saw a car speeding.

The sheriff's office said that the deputy checked his radar and saw that he was driving 112 mph in a 70 mph zone.

The deputy turned on his emergency equipment and tried to pull over the vehicle, but the driver would not stop and continued on I-64 east, exceeding 130 mph.

According to the sheriff's office, they chased the vehicle through James City County before it ended in York County.

Officials said the driver pulled over on I-64 east at mile marker 236, in between the Lightfoot, Williamsburg and Camp Peary exits.

The sheriff's office said they found another passenger inside when the vehicle stopped. The passenger said Vargas refused to stop or let them out of the vehicle.

The driver, who was identified by officials as 20-year-old Xavien Vargas of Newport News, was taken into custody without further incident.

Vargas faces the following charges, according to the sheriff’s office:

  • Abduction
  • Felony eluding
  • Reckless driving speed
  • Reckless driving general
  • Reckless failure to maintain control
  • No valid operator's license
