20-year-old man dead after running off I-85, hitting tree in Mecklenburg

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 20-year-old Boydton man is dead after he ran off Interstate 85 and crashed into a tree in Mecklenburg County on New Year's Day.
At about 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 1, Virginia State Police troopers were called to I-85 North at mile marker 9 -- a few miles away from the Route 58 exit.
According to police, a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu was heading northbound on I-85 when it went off the right side of the road. The vehicle slid and hit a tree on the vehicle's driver's side.
The driver, 20-year-old Brandon Alexander, of Boydton, died at the scene.
Police said he was wearing a seatbelt.
The crash is still under investigation.
