25-year-old woman arrested in Chesterfield housefire that killed two residents including her grandmother

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A woman has been identified and arrested in connection to a Chesterfield County house fire that left two women dead.

On Saturday, Oct. 18 at 4:20 a.m., Chesterfield County Fire and EMS crews responded to a fire alarm call at 500 Rosegill Rd. When crews arrived, they found a home up in flames and called for additional units to respond.

Firefighters found and rescued two women who were inside and transported them to the hospital where they later died from their injuries. The two victims have been identified as 75-year-old Evelyn Newman and 78-year-old Hazel Johnson.

According to the Chesterfield County Police Department, Evelyn and Johnson were sisters and resided at the home.

Chesterfield fire marshal's and police have determined that the fire was "intentionally set inside the residence.."

25-year-old Alicia Newman has been arrested for "intentionally setting fire to an occupied dwelling," according to police. She is currently being held at the Chesterfield County Jail without bond.

According to police, Newman does not have a permanent address and is the granddaughter of Evelyn Newman.

Officials say they will continue their investigation and anticipate that more charges will be filed.
