3 arrested after over $300K in drugs seized at Greensville Correctional Center

GREENSVILLE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- More than $300,000 in drugs were seized after three people were allegedly caught smuggling drugs into the Greensville Correctional Center and were then arrested.

The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) released a statement saying it had worked with law enforcement agencies after a correctional officer and his associates, were caught during a drug smuggling investigation at Greenville Correctional Center.

On Friday, March 1, the VADOC Office of Law Enforcement Services (OLES) special agents received information from the facility. Xavier Campbell, who was a correctional officer at the time, reportedly told others how he had been compensated for smuggling drugs into the correctional center.

According to VADOC, when the special agents talked to Campbell, he admitted to smuggling items into the facility on different occasions in exchange for payment. Campbell consented to a search that reportedly resulted in several packages being found that contained a variety of contraband including:

  • Buprenorphine
  • Naloxone
  • Methamphetamine
  • Fentanyl
  • Marijuana
  • Tobacco

Special agents were able to identify the name of Campbell’s source and scheduled a meeting, according to VADOC. OLES, the Greensville County Sheriff’s Office, and the Southampton County Sheriff's Office were able to identify the vehicle of Campbell's source and initiated a traffic stop.

According to VADOC, the car was searched and a similar package of contraband to what had been in Campbell’s car was found along with a stolen firearm. Two suspects -- Willie Gamble, who had recently been released from VADOC custody, and Erica Randolph, who was with him in the car -- were arrested.

“The drugs that were seized were estimated to be more than $300,000 worth in prison value,” a press release from VADOC explained.

Campbell was charged with:

  • Attempt to deliver drugs to a prisoner
  • Possession of Schedule I & II controlled substance with intent to distribute

Gamble was charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I & II controlled substance with intent to distribute
  • Possession of a Schedule I & II controlled substance
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
  • Possession of a firearm while in possession of certain substances
  • Carrying concealed weapons

Randolph was charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I & II controlled substance
  • Possession of a Schedule I & II controlled substance with intent to distrbibute

“Drugs and contraband have absolutely no place in our facilities,” said VADOC Director Chad Dotson. "Our agency is working around the clock to stop smugglers from spreading their dangerous poison into our secure facilities." Thank you to our OLES Special Agents, and to the Greensville and Southampton County Sheriff’s Offices for their great work in this case."
