36 Hours for Kids Radiothon kicks off to support lifesaving care in Central Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Thousands of children across Central Virginia rely on the Children’s Hospital of Richmond each year for lifesaving treatment, ongoing therapies and support programs. That need is at the center of the annual 36 Hours for Kids Radiothon, a fundraiser now underway to boost critical services for young patients and their families.

Among those benefiting is 8-year-old Jonah Smith, who has received care at the hospital since birth while living with multiple disabilities -- including spinal muscular atrophy, a rare disease that causes rapid loss of muscle mass.

His mother, Rebekah Smith, told 8News that the Radiothon plays a vital role in ensuring families like hers have access to the resources they depend on.

“When we first started coming here, they didn’t even have the children’s tower,” Smith said. “All the donations people contribute have made this possible.”

The Radiothon, held in partnership with Mix 98.1, raises money for essential programs including surgeries, family-centered care and child-life services that help young patients cope with extended hospital stays.

According to Lauren Moore, president and CEO of the Children’s Hospital Foundation, the event has generated nearly $2.3 million over 14 years, helping strengthen pediatric care across the region.

Rebekah said the support her family received — even before doctors fully understood Jonah’s condition — made a significant difference.

“They held my hand through it when we didn’t know the answers,” Smith said. “They gave me the resources I was looking for.”

This year’s fundraising goal is to surpass $200,000 over the two-day event — though Jonah has set his sights even higher.

“I want them to donate a million dollars,” he said with a grin.

There’s still time to help. The 36 Hours for Kids Radiothon continues through Friday, Dec.12, with every dollar going toward care that changes — and in many cases saves — children’s lives. Donations can be made by visiting 36HoursRVA.org or calling 804-228-KIDS.
