41-year-old Richmond man charged after officer-involved shooting

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Richmond Police Department has charged a 41-year-old man for the officer-involved shooting incident from Saturday night.

On Sunday, Jan. 18, Richmond officers charged the man who was involved in the officer shooting incident that occurred on Saturday night.

The suspect, now identified as 41-year-old Thomas Anderson of Richmond, was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, with additional charges pending, according to the press release.

On Jan. 17, around 8:55 p.m., officers responded to a gas station located at the 200 block of East Belt Boulevard for reports of an armed man, which was later changed to a shots-fired call.

Once on the scene, officers were told that the man had fired a shot at a Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC) employee, but no one was harmed.

Officers were informed that the suspect had left the area and was heading towards the 300 block of East Belt Boulevard.

The suspect was then found by officers at GRTC headquarters, where he had previously shot at a staff member. Police ordered him to drop his weapon, but he instead fired at the officers.

Officers responded by firing at the suspect, who was then shot. He was then taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

His injuries are no longer considered life-threatening, according to the release from Richmond police.

Per the Richmond Police Department policy, the two officers who struck the suspect have been placed on paid administrative leave.
