64-year-old woman killed in single-vehicle crash in Buckingham

BUCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 64-year-old woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Buckingham County on Monday evening amid hazardous weather conditions.

Virginia State Police said the crash took place at 8:06 p.m. on Monday, March 16, along Constitution Road, about 0.2 miles north of Slate River Mill Road, in Buckingham County.

According to police, a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox was traveling southbound when it encountered hazardous roadway conditions due to severe weather

An initial investigation shows that the driver hit, later identified as 64-year-old Demita Joann Jackson of Dillwyn, the upper branches of a downed tree that was partially obstructing the roadway.

The driver lost control of the vehicle, which ran off the right side of the roadway and hit another tree due to low visibility and adverse weather conditions.

Police said Jackson, who was the only person in the Chevrolet, died due to her injuries at the scene.

She was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, police said.

The crash remains under investigation.
