75-year-old North Carolina man killed in Dinwiddie hit-and-run

DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A 75-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run crash after he stepped outside of his car and spoke with a driver behind him on Route 1 in Dinwiddie County on Friday, according to police.

At around 8:50 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30, police responded to a hit-and-run involving a pedestrian in the 6500 block of Boydton Plank Road (Route 1).

Police said the pedestrian, identified as 75-year-old Linwood Earl Williams of Snow Hill, North Carolina, had exited his car at the time. His car was stopped in the turn lane leading into the Aldi Distribution Center.

While Williams was speaking to the driver of a tractor-trailer stopped behind him, he was hit by an unknown car traveling northbound on Route 1. Williams was standing in the northbound travel lane at the time of the crash, per Virginia State Police.

Williams was transported to Bon Secours Southside Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.

Police said the suspect vehicle fled the scene and there's no available vehicle description. Alcohol involvement is under investigation.
