79-year-old killed in Chesterfield County house fire, first responders injured

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Chesterfield Fire Marshal's Office identified the victim and cause of Saturday's deadly house fire.

At 12:27 p.m. on March 8, Chesterfield Fire and EMS -- along with aid crews -- responded to a reported house fire in the 4200 block of Richwine Road.

According to the fire department, the first crews on the scene discovered fire coming from the front of the home.

Shortly after, the first responders tried to rescue 79-year-old Betty Hicks from the inside of the house. She died from injuries.

One firefighter and two police officers had non-life-threatening injuries from attempting to save Hicks from the home. They were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The investigation determined that the cause of the fire was smoking close to oxygen equipment.
