80-year-old Emporia man dead after logs go through windshield in Greensville crash

GREENSVILLE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- An 80-year-old Emporia man is dead after a Monday morning crash in Greensville County, during which he hit a log truck and its logs went through his windshield, killing him.

At 11:39 a.m. on Monday, May 19, Virginia State Police responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Brink Road and Fountain Creek Road in Greensville County.

Investigators determined that a 2007 International logging truck was moving west on Brink Road when the unidentified driver slowed to turn onto Fountain Creek Road.

According to state police, 80-year-old Phillip Lewis Brown of Emporia failed to slow his 1997 GMC Sonoma truck, causing him to rear-end the log truck.

"The logging truck was loaded, which caused the logs to penetrate the [windshield] of the GMC truck, killing Brown instantly," state police said.

Neither speed nor alcohol are considered factors in this crash.
