8News gets a visit from ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation organizers
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- 8News got a visit from the two organizers from the ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation to discuss the anniversary of the 20th annual 5K & Fun Walk on May 3 at the Diamond.
Anchors Delaney Hall and Autumn Childress were joined by Kelsey Olszewski, Associate Director of Development and Caitlin Glauser, Special Events Coordinator of the ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation, to discuss the anniversary of the walk, as this year marks the foundation's 50th anniversary.
"It's been crazy celebrating how far we've come. When we started, we were very small, volunteer-run, [and] started in the Children's Hospital of Richmond -- and then we hired our first stock person 20 years ago," Olszewski said. "We're just looking forward to making our vision come to life, where every child diagnosed with cancer across Virginia has the support they need to get through treatment and beyond."
Olszewski said the goal this year is to raise over $300,000. The funds raised from the upcoming walk will give 550 children and families across Virginia financial and educational help during and after treatment.
"My favorite part is how we end our event -- our courageous kids' victory lap -- so any child on active treatment or survivorship gets to storm the field and do a victory lap around the bases to the cheers of the Richmond community coming out to support them," Glauser said.
Those who want to participate can register for the race here. The deadline to register online is Wednesday, April 30, at midnight. However, you may still register in person on the morning of the walk.
