8News kicks off Black History Month with return of art exhibition

RICHMOND, Va. -- 8News is kicking off its Black History Month coverage with the return of our art exhibition at Art Works. This year's display, titled "History and Stories: Lifted by Legacy," is curated alongside the Black Artists' Alliance of Richmond.

The exhibition opening will take place on Friday, Jan. 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Art Works located at 320 Hull Street Rd. The event is free and open to the public. It is an opportunity to meet the artists, hear music and see work from 8News photojournalists and local artists.

After the opening, the exhibition will stay on display through Feb. 21. Art Works is open Tuesday through Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Turning survival into excellence, stories of local people, places and organizations exemplify the ways in which Black Virginians have increasingly thrived within a system not even designed for Black bodies to survive.

The perspectives shift between the journalists quite literally recording the so-called first rough draft of history and those who reinterpret, challenge and artistically express subsequent interpretations.

8News held its inaugural Black History Month exhibition at Art Works last year and we are looking forward to welcoming viewers and community members again this year.
