AAA shares icy driving tips ahead of the arctic blast
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- As Richmond and other parts of Central Virginia brace for an artic blast, AAA experts are sharing tips on driving in icy conditions. "What drivers really need to be concerned about with this storm coming in is that it's starting out as rain," said AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesperson Morgan Dean. “So that really is the concern that there could be some ice building up on the roadways tonight, and tomorrow." The storm is expected to bring freezing conditions that could last for the next few days, and there is a possibility we will see a light dusting of snow in Richmond. This combination of icy roads and snow could make driving particularly dangerous, so VDOT advises people to stay off the roads. If you have to leave, here are some things you can do to stay safe behind the wheel: Increase your following distance between cars Slow down Pack an emergency kit in your car Dean said this might include things like jumper cables, blankets, an ice scraper and a shovel. Dean also said if you come across a road that is untreated and still looks icy, try to travel in the marks left behind by the vehicle that drove before you. If you do get caught in an ice patch, Dean said 'gentle driving' is the best option. "Drivers want to sometimes slam on the brakes or try and turn the wheel to see if they can gain control of it but that can actually put your car into a spin and be very dangerous." "So just [give] a very light tap on the brake if you're even going to touch the brake at all, holding on to that wheel, starting to turn the direction that you want it to turn it to very gently and where you want the vehicle to go." Slower movements are safer, Dean said. Before you start driving anywhere during these cold temperatures, make sure to check your car’s tire pressure, battery and windshield wiper fluid to make sure your vehicle is prepared. But again, officials are advising people to stay off the roads.
