Active shooter training exercise to impact part of VCU’s Monroe Park Campus in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- An active shooter training exercise held by the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Police Department and the Richmond Police Department will impact a part of the university's Monroe Park Campus on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, March 12, the VCU Police Department and Richmond Police Department will hold an active shooter training exercise from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the 900 block of West Franklin Street.

According to officials, the area will be closed starting at 6 a.m. on Wednesday and restrictions will remain in place until 5 p.m.

Sidewalks in the area will reportedly remain open to pedestrians, with the exception of the sidewalk directly in front of the VCU Office of the President.

According to VCU, the exercise will involve the sound of simulated gunfire and actors in realistic makeup that mimic significant injuries.

Community members can also expect to see law enforcement and emergency personnel from multiple jurisdictions at the training exercise, including Richmond Police SWAT personnel and law enforcement drones.

Officials said Wednesday's active shooter training exercise is a rescheduled event from January following winter weather and water outage impacts at that time.
