All-electronic tolling coming to Richmond expressways, ramps
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Drivers traveling on certain expressways in Richmond will soon no longer be able to pay tolls with cash and coins.
The Richmond Metropolitan Transportation Authority (RMTA) announced that construction has begun for its transition to an all-electronic tolling system on the Powhite Parkway, Boulevard Bridge and all ramps.
RMTA said the new system will modernize its toll collection process, improve traffic flow and enhance roadway safety.
At the Downtown Expressway, drivers will only be able to pay cash between 6:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Tolls will be collected using an E-ZPass outside of those hours. Pay-by-plate will apply if a driver doesn't have an E-ZPass.
Here's what the RMTA said drivers should know about the system:
- No stopping required: Vehicles will be detected using overhead equipment that reads E-ZPass transponders or license plates.
- Pay-by-plate: When drivers travel on the expressway system without E-ZPass transponders, a camera will capture images of their vehicles’ license plates and the registered owners will receive statements in the mail.
- Lower rates with E-ZPass: Drivers are encouraged to obtain E-ZPass transponders for a lower-cost trip. For example, the E-ZPass rate for two-axles is $.90 on the Powhite Parkway and Downtown Expressway. For drivers who do not have an E-ZPass, the pay-by-plate rate is $2.
