Ashland Police Department warns of scam callers who claim to be officers

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Ashland Police Department is warning residents of scam calls received in the county where callers claim to be police officers.

According to a post on social media by the department, residents of the town of Ashland in Hanover County have reportedly received phone calls from scammers who claim to be Ashland Police officers.

During the scam, the callers reportedly tell potential victims that they have missed a court appearance and must pay a fine.

Officials said scammers use different phone numbers, and it is possible for them to "spoof" the police department's phone number, which would appear on your caller ID.

The Ashland Police Department said it does not call anyone regarding court appearances or warrants and never demands money.
