ASPCA urges pet owners to take extra precautions as winter weather continues

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- As winter weather settles into Central Virginia, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is warning pet owners that cold temperatures can be even more dangerous for animals than for people.

From frostbitten paws to toxic chemicals, experts say many winter-related pet injuries are preventable with simple precautions.

The ASPCA stresses one key rule: if it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for your pet. Pets left outside in freezing temperatures can quickly become disoriented, injured or worse, according to experts.

Officials also warn against leaving pets in cars during cold weather. Vehicles can trap cold air, causing animals to freeze even when outdoor temperatures don’t seem extreme.

Winter walks can pose additional risks. Ice melts, salt and other de-icing chemicals can stick to pets’ paws and poison them if licked off. The ASPCA recommends washing and drying pets’ paws after every walk, checking between toes and using pet-friendly ice melts whenever possible. Paw balms or booties can also help prevent irritation and cracking.

Antifreeze is another major concern during winter months. Even small amounts can be deadly to pets. The ASPCA urges pet owners to clean up any antifreeze spills immediately and keep all chemicals securely out of reach.

The organization also cautions pet owners to never let dogs off leash in snow or icy conditions, noting that more dogs go missing in winter than any other season.

Experts said simple steps — such as keeping pets indoors during freezing weather, providing warm bedding, ensuring access to fresh water and monitoring paws regularly — can go a long way in keeping animals safe.

The bottom line, the ASPCA said: a little extra preparation can help keep pets warm, healthy and out of harm’s way this winter.
