Back to School Guide for Cumberland County Public Schools

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- 8News is your back-to-school headquarters this 2025-26 school year! Here's what students and families kicking off a new academic year at Cumberland County Public Schools need to know.

The first day of school for Cumberland County Public School students is Aug. 11.

Things to know and what to bring to school

The school district said students and parents should be aware that attendance is important from the first day of the school year. Officials also encouraged parents to have an open line of communication with their children's teachers.

Students are also expected to have typical school supplies, like backpacks, notebooks, writing utensils, highlighters and composition books. Specific school supply lists can be found by clicking on the corresponding school websites below:

In regard to school meals and nutrition services, all students will be eligible for free breakfast and lunch.

Policies, changes for students and families to know about

In terms of security, each building will have Student Resource Officers (SRO), security cameras and locked doors that require all guests to enter through the main doors and go through a screening process.

School policy prohibits students from "carrying, bringing, using, or possessing any firearm, dangerous device or deadly weapon" while in school buildings, on school grounds or at school-sponsored activities.

Additionally, there is a new protocol in place for ticketed events and athletic games -- no bags are allowed except clear plastic tote bags, unless the person has approved medical equipment.

Regarding cell phone usage, the school district states that students are not allowed to have their phones from the first bell ring signaling the start of the school day until the dismissal bell -- this includes personal electronic devices such as iPads, tablets, smart watches, gaming devices and headphones or earbuds. Exceptions can be made, with a doctor's note, for health monitoring devices.

The district announced that this year Cumberland County High School will be offering a cybersecurity class and a design and multimedia class.

Anything on the calendar before school starts?

On Aug. 7, the school district will be hosting a Back to School Night -- Open House -- from 1 to 6 p.m.
