Bike lane expansion project coming to Richmond’s Southside

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A new "quick build" bike lane expansion project is coming to Richmond's Southside as of Thursday afternoon, with plans for completion by winter this year.

Drivers should expect some disruptions during the construction phase, but DPW ensures that it aims to minimize inconveniences.

According to an Oct. 9 release from the city's Department of Public Works," a new quick build project will be implemented on Belt Boulevard between Broad Rock Road and Warwick Road, supporting the Richmond 300 master plan, Richmond Connects transportation plan and City’s Vision Zero Action Plan.

The project will reportedly repave and reorganize Belt Boulevard to increase safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. Specifically, the expansion will ensure safer access to the Hickory Hill Community Center.

This will result in a one general-purpose lane and one protected bike lane in each direction, according to DPW.

Belt Boulevard accounts for 76% of the traffic-related deaths and serious injuries on just 9% of Richmond's streets, officials said.

This particular section of the roadway experienced 10 severe crashes where "speed or crash energy overwhelmed the person and caused serious injuries," per a release.

This news comes nearly a year after the announcement of bike lane projects underway in Richmond’s Southside and Carver neighborhood. The Southside project was originally intended to be implemented along Holly Springs Avenue between Broad Rock and Hopkins roads.
