Boil water notice issued for some Petersburg residents after crews repair main valve

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- Some Petersburg residents are advised to boil water after crews repair a water main valve in the Walnut Hill neighborhood that caused nearly 100 homes to lose water service Thursday morning.

At 9:20 a.m. on Thursday, March 13, the City of Petersburg reported that about 94 homes in the Beauregard Avenue area of Walnut Hill were without water as Petersburg Public Works and contractor crews work to repair a water main valve in the neighborhood.

According to the city, when repairs are complete and water is restored, residents in the following areas should boil all tap water:

  • 405-441 blocks of Beauregard Avenue, between Jackson Court and Parkwood Court
  • 1900-2012 blocks of Burks Street
  • 410-422 blocks of Greenwood Avenue, between Coggin Street and Beauregard Avenue
  • 2104-2032 blocks of Jackson Court
  • 700-720 blocks of Sunset Avenue, between Cumberland Avenue and Windsor Road
  • 1906-2020 blocks of Cumberland Avenue, between West South Boulevard and Sunset Avenue
  • 1901-2019 blocks of Windsor Road, between West South Boulevard and Sunset Avenue
  • 711 Brookside Avenue

The city said residents should bring all tap water to a rolling boil, let it boil for one minute and let it cool before using, or use bottled water for drinking, cooking or making ice until further notice.

"To address this problem, we are flushing the system, sampling for chlorine, and completing required bacteriological testing. We anticipate resolving the problem within 24 to 48 hours," the city said in its Facebook post.

The City of Petersburg said it will inform residents when they no longer need to boil their water.

Petersburg residents with questions about water usage are advised to call 804-733-2407.
