Caroline County Sheriff’s Office advises residents to stay safe around icy bodies of water during winter months
CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Caroline County Sheriff's Office is reminding residents to be cautious near icy bodies of water during the winter months. In a post to social media in the morning on Tuesday, Jan. 14, the sheriff's office said many neighborhoods in the county have lakes, ponds and streams that are potentially dangerous during the winter months. Officials urge residents, especially parents and guardians, to stay vigilant during low temperatures to ensure that children are not attempting to walk on thin ice. "Ice in Central Virginia very rarely freezes sufficiently to safely bear weight. Please stay off all frozen surfaces," the sheriff's office said. In addition, officials advise folks to monitor play areas to ensure children don't play on or near ice. This comes after a child fell through an icy pond in Chesterfield County on Saturday, Jan. 11. Officials said the child was able to get out of the water before responders arrived and is safe. If a child falls into an ice-covered body of water, the sheriff's office said to call 911 immediately, and don't attempt to rescue someone by also walking onto the ice.
