Celebrate community with free festival in Richmond’s Jackson Ward, Gilpin Court corridor

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Join Richmond leaders in celebrating community with a Sunday afternoon festival packed with music, food and fun.

From noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28, "Falling for the Culture: A Festival of Unity, Peace and Hope" will take over the Jackson Ward and Gilpin Court corridor.

This free event will feature live entertainment, local artists and vendors, free food, games like giant Jenga and Jumbo Connect Four, youth activities and more. There will be a community praise break, as well as a parade-style participation from Virginia Union University's (VUU) band.

Attendees will also be given access to community resources, organizers said.

“This festival is more than a celebration — it’s an opportunity to create space for creativity, connection and hope, while building greater unity within the Richmond community,” said Dee Anderson, public safety program manager with the Richmond Police Department’s Community Youth & Intervention Services (CYIS) Unit.

There will be road closures in place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday in the area of the festival, as shown in the map above. The impacted areas include:

  • The 900 through 1000 block of N. 1st Street, between E. Baker and Federal streets
  • The 00 through 100 block of E. Charity Street, between St. James and N. 2nd streets

This event is hosted by RPD's CYIS Unit in partnership with the city's Office of Gun Violence Prevention, as well as Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.
