Central Virginia natives killed by lightning strike while hunting in Colorado
ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Two Central Virginia natives who went missing while hunting in Colorado were killed by a lightning strike, according to the local coroner's office.
On Thursday, Sept. 18, 25-year-old Andrew Porter of Asheville, North Carolina and 25-year-old Ian Stasko of Salt Lake City, Utah were found dead after a six-day search.
Loved ones reported Porter and Stasko missing on Saturday, Sept. 13 after the two men, who were elk hunting in the San Juan National Forest Wilderness Area in Colorado, failed to check in with them as expected.
A "massive search" was launched by the Conejos County Sheriff’s Office after deputies found Porter and Stasko's vehicle abandoned -- with camping gear and backpacks inside -- at the Rio De Los Pinos Trailhead.

Authorities confirmed that two bodies were found about 2 miles from the Rio De Los Pinos Trail Head on Thursday. While their formal identification is pending, a family member told KDVR that these two men are Porter and Stasko.
Initially, it was said that ongoing heavy rain and stormy conditions had authorities especially concerned. Tragically, the Conejos County Coroner's Office told KDVR that it was indeed a lightning strike that killed Porter and Stasko. No visible signs of trauma or foul play have been found.
CBS19 learned that Porter and Stasko were originally from the Charlottesville area, having graduated from Albemarle County High School in 2018.
The Conejos County Sheriff's Office shared the following statement on Thursday about its efforts to find Porter and Stasko:
"This search was made possible through the coordinated response of multiple resources, including ground search & rescue teams, law enforcement teams, Forest Service crew, air support, canine units, horseback riders and the over 170 personnel who assisted in the search. We extend our deepest gratitude to the New Mexico State Search & Rescue and Colorado Search and Rescue Association.
The commitment, coordination and professionalism of all those involved in the search are a testament to our efforts. This collaborative effort reflects the strength of our community and the unwavering dedication to every volunteer and agency involved. We are proud of the perseverance demonstrated throughout the search."
