Chesterfield drivers approve of Hull Street Road traffic enforcement detail
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Officers with the Chesterfield County Police Department are stepping up enforcement on Hull Street Road in an effort to reduce the number of traffic accidents.
The target area was decided by a vote from Chesterfield residents completed on social media. The police hope the number of crashes will decrease following their second traffic enforcement detail of 2025.
On any given day, countless drivers will hop into their vehicles and run daily errands on Hull Street Road, but today, they may notice something different.
Police say they're enforcing a traffic detail and will release data later with the hope that this will reduce the number of wrecks and issues.
Lori Benson has called Chesterfield County home for three years and says driving here can be "pretty rough."
"There's a lot of accidents. There could be three or four accidents on the daily. Just people not paying attention where they're going," she said.
Benson says she and her neighbors just wish they could avoid this route. That's why police -- as directed by the community after a social media poll -- are putting all hands on deck and searching for speeding and impaired drivers.
They're also searching for drivers with a mobile device in their hand -- which has been illegal in Virginia since 2021.
Another driver who spoke off camera wishes officers would do this more often and not advertise it. Lucky for her, Sergeant Kyle Easton says the police have done these enforcements unannounced.
That, along with this community vote program, is where some drivers say it's a good use of department energy, time and resources.
Drivers will have another chance to vote online for another traffic enforcement in the fall, and more people other than Chesterfield County residents can make their voice heard.
"Anything we can do to help Hull Street is fine … is good. If we need to use some money to slow people down, then I say 'let's do it,'" Benson said.
