These tips include:
- Only use generators outside, never run one in a home, garage, shed or next to windows, doors and vents. Carbon monoxide can build up quickly, which can be deadly.
- Generators should be placed at least 20 feet from buildings, with the exhaust directed away from your home.
- When using your generator, use only approved extension cords designed for outdoor use.
- The generator should never be directly connected to the home's electrical system unless there is a properly installed transfer switch.
- Before refueling a generator, allow it to cool down and ensure the fuel is stored in approved containers away from the generator.
- Generators should only be operated on a flat surface and in dry spaces.
- Before making adjustments or maintenance on the generator, make sure it is off and cooled off.
