Chesterfield marks major milestone on new-and-improved animal shelter

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Chesterfield County came together on Friday to mark a major milestone in the construction of the county's new animal shelter.

On Friday, March 27, Chesterfield leaders, animal services staff and neighbors gathered for a "Topping Out" ceremony for Chesterfield County Animal Services' new shelter, during which they placed the facility's final structural beam.

The new-and-improved facility, which will be located at 9531 Government Center Pkwy, will effectively triple Chesterfield's animal shelter space.

“The importance of a pet in someone’s life cannot be understated,” said county administrator Joe Casey in a press release.

The county will upgrade from its existing 10,430-square-foot shelter to a nearly 31,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility, complete with a full veterinary and surgical center, expansive outdoor spaces and even a 1,400-square-foot barn.

"Set to open this fall, the new space represents a shift toward more compassionate, modern care for our community’s four-legged family members," the county said in a Facebook post.

Leaders initially broke ground on the shelter in May 2025.
