Chesterfield neighbors seek answers as absent trash service leaves garbage piling up

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Chesterfield neighbors are asking questions after they said trash has been overflowing since January’s winter storm.
Midlothian resident Brittany Edwards said it’s been nearly three weeks since her trash was picked up, and frustrations are starting to mount.
“It’s more annoying than anything,” Edwards said. “It's not dangerous like it was a week ago. So, my question is, what is causing the delays now?’”
Edwards said Choice Waste Services usually come every Friday for trash and recycling bi-weekly. Since January’s storm Edwards said service has been absent due to icy roads. However, Edwards said conditions are better and there is still no service.
Edwards said emails from the company say neighbors’ garbage and recycling would be picked up on the week of Feb. 2-7, but no one came.
Edwards said she gets billed $110 every three months for trash services but said recent events have her exploring her options.
“They say we're going to be reimbursed for two weeks, but that doesn't help with the trash at the moment,” Edwards said. “There are people that have five bags of trash already in their trash can. So, then the concern is about wild animals getting into trash.”
She said the company told her they would come on Friday, Feb. 13, for trash services.
8News reached to a spokesperson for Choice Waste Services who said the company is back to its regular schedule for recycling and trash pickup. They also said information about service delays were shared on the company's website, Facebook page and sent in "communication blasts" emails.
While the company originally intended for pickups to be on Friday, Feb. 6, the road conditions prevented their attempts -- the large and heavy vehicles posed a threat to parked cars and mailboxes that was considered dangerous.
The Choice Waste Services spokesperson said reimbursements will depend on what customers are asking for and the type of account they have.
Chesterfield County officials said the county does not have a dedicated division that conducts trash and recycling pick up. Rather, residents choose who they want and establish their own services.
Officials did list options of larger vendors doing trash and recycling pick up residents can use:
