Chesterfield reminds residents to keep ‘illicit discharges’ out of storm drains
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Chesterfield County is reminding residents to be mindful of what goes into local storm drains.
Under Chesterfield’s stormwater ordinance, it is illegal for unmanaged and intentional non-stormwater discharges to flow into the county’s storm sewer system — including the disposal of yard debris such as leaves.
Officials said connecting any structure or device that transports liquids other than stormwater to the county's storm sewer system is also prohibited unless authorized.
An “illicit discharge” includes:
- Automotive fluids
- Herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers
- Paints, solvents and household chemicals
- Pet waste
- Sewage
- Yard waste, grass clippings and leaves
The county said these discharges can pollute waterways, harm wildlife and increase flooding risks by clogging storm drains.
Residents who spot an illicit discharge are encouraged to call Chesterfield’s 24-hour hotline at 804-717-6161. More information can be found here.
