Chesterfield Sheriff’s Office warns of phone, online scams

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office is warning residents again of fraudsters targeting residents with phone and online scams.

Authorities assured residents that they would never call to demand money or threaten arrest over the phone.

According to the sheriff's office, scammers may do the following:

  • Claim to be law enforcement or court officials
  • Demand immediate payment to avoid arrest or legal trouble
  • Request payment through gift cards, money transfers, or apps

The sheriff's office urged anyone who receives calls like this to hang up immediately, not share personal or financial information and report suspicious calls or messages.

Residents can also view active warrants on the county’s website by typing “active warrants” in the search field. This will show active warrants and capias in the county, per authorities.

This is not the only scam regarding Chesterfield law enforcement, with several jury duty scams hitting the area past several months.

If you or someone you know believes they are a victim of a phone scam, you are urged to contact the Chesterfield County Police Department at 804-748-1251.
