Chesterfield Sheriff’s Office warns of scammers acting as government employees

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office warned residents of scammers impersonating sheriff's office employees over the phone.

According to a social post on Feb. 26, the sheriff's office received multiple reports of people being targeted by fraudsters using false names in the past several weeks.

Residents are advised to be wary of callers claiming they have missed jury duty, court or other related matters. Authorities said one of the main indicators for these scams are requests for payments.

The jury duty scam, as it's referred to in previous reporting, has recurred frequently across Chesterfield and neighboring counties in the last couple years.

The sheriff's office reminded residents that they will never instruct a person to pay money to make a charge “go away." Additionally, they will never request for residents to meet with a deputy and pay using a pre-paid card.

Active warrants can be viewed on the county's website by typing “active warrants” in the search field. This will show active warrants and capias in Chesterfield County.

If you or someone you know feels you are a victim of a phone scam, contact the Chesterfield County Police Department at 804-748-1251.
