Chesterfield student hit by driver right after getting off school bus

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A Chesterfield County student was hit by a driver right after they got off their school bus on Friday.

The crash took place at about 11:37 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 14, in the 12400 block of Riverway Road, according to the Chesterfield County Police Department.

Investigators determined that the driver of a white Kia Sorento "disregarded" the flashing red lights and stop bar of a Chesterfield County Public Schools bus and hit a student who had just exited the bus.

The unidentified child was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The driver of the Sorento, whom police did not identify, remained at the scene.

Per Virginia Code, failing to stop for a school bus that has its red lights flashing and its stop arm extended is a crime. Police told 8News that, in accordance with that code section, the driver involved in this incident was charged with reckless driving.
