Chesterfield’s Powhite Parkway expansion to cost about $305 million

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Chesterfield County is a step closer to the Powhite Parkway expansion and nearby roadway projects, with roadway improvements estimated to cost about $305 million.

The improvements have been in the making for more than 30 years and are finally coming to fruition, according to a social media post from the county.

The project aims to "make it easier for motorists living in western Chesterfield" to access Powhite Parkway or Route 288 "without having to use the heavily traveled Hull Street Road," per the county.

At a recent community meeting on Wednesday, June 18, at Clover Hill High School, about 100 residents learned more about Phase I of the Powhite Parkway expansion project.

The county said the following expansions will occur to "help ease traffic in the Route 360 corridor."

  • Powhite Parkway will extend 2.25 miles to Woolridge Road, which is scheduled to begin construction by spring 2026.
  • Woolridge Road will be widened and extended to Route 288, which is scheduled to begin construction by spring 2026.
  • Center Pointe Parkway will connect to Old Hundred Road, which is scheduled to begin construction by winter 2027.

In June 2024, Chesterfield sold about $300 million in revenue bonds to fund several transportation projects, including the first phase extending Powhite Parkway 2.25 miles from "its current terminus at Little Tomahawk Creek to Woolridge Road."

According to the county, comments are open through 5 p.m. on Friday, June 18.
