City of Richmond to host E-Cycle Day event for hazardous household items

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Several departments within the City of Richmond are working to host an E-Cycle Day event for people to safely dispose of sensitive or harmful household items.

E-Cycle Day will take place on Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1710 Robin Hood Road, courtesy of the city's Department of Public Works, Clean City Commission and Department of Public Utilities.

Richmonders will have the opportunity to recycle paper and electronics in an attempt to keep hazardous waste materials out of local waterways, according to a city release.

This is a drive-thru event where volunteers will remove the items from cars. Only city residents are allowed to participate, meaning that proof of residency will be required.

A list of acceptable and non-acceptable items has been provided by the city:

  • Paper Document Shredding
    • Up to five boxes of documents
    • Be sure to remove all binders, staples and clips
  • Electronics (various fees apply)
    • Computer systems (hard drive or CPU) and accessories (cables, wires, keyboards, mice, speakers, etc.) VCRs, camcorders, stereos and all phones
    • Televisions, computer monitors and printers
    • Other used electronic equipment (almost anything with a plug)

  • Household Hazardous Waste Items (HHW)
    • Pesticides, herbicides and oil-based paints (Roundup, Weed B Gon, etc.)
    • Bug spray, rodent poison
    • Latex and water-based paints will NOT be collected
