Corrections officer dies after ‘violent attack’ by inmate at River North Correctional Center
GRAYSON COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A corrections officer has died following a reported "violent attack" by an inmate at River North Correctional Center in Grayson County.
The "violent attack" by an inmate reportedly occurred at 7:53 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 17, at River North Correctional Center in the Independence area of River North Correctional Center, according to the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC).
The corrections officer was then taken to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead, the department said.
Another officer was reportedly attacked in the incident and was taken to a local hospital.
VADOC said River North Correctional Center is currently secure.
The department's Office of Law Enforcement Services will continue to investigate the incident.
“Our agency and the entire Commonwealth are in mourning today,” said VADOC Director Chad Dotson. “Our hearts are with the Officer’s family, the other Officer who was attacked, and to our public safety heroes at River North. The VADOC will do everything in its power to ensure this vicious attack is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
