Culpeper man charged with DUI after police chase and crash

CULPEPER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A Culpeper man was arrested and charged with driving under the influence (DUI), among other charges, after police said a traffic stop turned into a pursuit and ended with a crash on Monday.

On Monday, March 2, an officer with the Culpeper Police Department pulled over a vehicle for suspected drunk driving and driving without taillights in the 400 block of James Madison Highway.

Police said the driver of the vehicle -- identified as Michael Jolliffe, of Culpeper -- initially complied and stopped in the Dominion Square parking lot.

As the officer approached the vehicle, police said Jolliffe's vehicle accelerated through the parking lot and began speeding onto Ira Hoffman Lane.

Shortly afterward, police said Jolliffe crashed his vehicle into a fence of a home in the 13000 block of Maymount Drive.

Officials said Jolliffe then fled on foot, with officers running behind him. During the foot chase, officers reportedly saw Jolliffe throw his backpack and fanny pack.

After a brief chase, officers reportedly caught up with Jolliffe, who police said resisted arrest, but was apprehended anyway.

After Jolliffe was taken into custody, police said officers determined that he showed signs of being intoxicated. Police reportedly obtained a search warrant, carried out a search, and found evidence related to Jolliffe's suspected driving under the influence.

Police said Jolliffe then received the following charges:

  • Felony eluding
  • Felony operating a vehicle endangering lives with a revoked license
  • Felony driving under the influence (with two prior violations)
  • Driving while revoked – DUI-related driving with a revoked or suspended license
  • Refusal of breath or blood test

Officials continue to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to call Officer G. Hutchinson at 540-829-5560 or send an email to tips@culpeperva.gov.
