‘Deadly’ traveling exhibit coming to Science Museum of Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Science Museum of Virginia is launching a new, temporary exhibit you'll be "dying" to see.

Starting on Saturday, Oct. 4, the Science Museum of Virginia will become the host of "The Power of Poison," a traveling exhibit that dives deep into the world of poison and venom.

The exhibit will feature historical flashbacks and interactive elements, allowing attendees to learn more about both the dangers and the benefits of poisons.

“Guests will see how nature’s most dangerous substances — poisons and venoms — both protect the species that wield them and inspire the development of cutting-edge treatments and cures,” said Timshel Purdum, the Science Museum’s Virginia C. Ellett Deputy Director of Education, in a press release.

Visitors will get to learn about the role poisons have played in stories both real and fictional: from how Napoleon's wallpaper hid a poisonous secret, to how poison brewed by witches is central to the plot of Shakespeare's "Macbeth."

In addition to the exhibit itself, the Science Museum will offer related hands-on programming. Visitors will be able to build 3D mushrooms in the museum's Art Lab, learn more about the venomous snakes native to Virginia and hone their skills in identifying poisonous plants, among other activities.

"The Power of Poison" will end its time at the Science Museum of Virginia on Sunday, April 19, 2026. Until then, access to this exhibit will be included with general admission to the museum.

This exhibit is organized by the American Museum of Natural History.
