Did RVAPay issues keep you from paying your taxes? You may have options
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Richmond taxpayers were meant to pay their personal property tax bills on Thursday -- however, the city's online payment system wasn't functioning as it should. Here's what you can do if you were impacted.
On Thursday, June 5, multiple types of personal property tax bills were due in the city of Richmond. Taxpayers are able to pay their bills both in person at City Hall and online via the RVAPay system.
However, 8News was made aware that many were struggling to use RVAPay to pay these bills on Thursday. This created concerns that they would be charged late fees.
A city spokesperson told 8News that RVAPay has been experiencing "a slow response time in transactions and intermittent system unavailability." The city is reportedly investigating the cause of these issues.
The city spokesperson maintained that RVAPay remains "operational."
In their initial email to 8News, the spokesperson said no extension or grace period would be provided to impacted taxpayers.
In a follow-up email, the spokesperson said citizens who "were unable to complete their transaction due to slow response time" may apply for a waiver of any penalties and interest incurred on their tax bills.
While the city spokesperson did not provide information on how to file such a waiver, you can contact the city's Department of Finance by calling 804-646-7000 or submitting a ticket on RVA 311. Alternatively, you can visit the Department of Finance in person at 900 E. Broad Street.
8News is working to learn more about this situation, including how exactly to file a waiver and how long these issues with RVAPay have existed.
Multiple other tax due dates are upcoming, with the earliest being on June 14. 8News is waiting to hear back from the city about whether or not these issues will be resolved by then.
No further details are available as of the time of reporting.
