RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A dog was taken in by Richmond Animal Care and Control (RACC) after it was found clinging to life near Riverside Drive in Richmond's Southside on Wednesday.

According to a social media post by the shelter on Wednesday, Feb. 5, RACC received a call regarding a dog that was thought to be dead, which was presumably dumped off of Riverside Drive.

When officers arrived, they found a dog that was "barely alive," and quickly took it to an emergency veterinarian. The shelter said the dog's body temperature was too cold to read and had a heart rate of 50.

In an update on social media on Thursday, Feb. 6, RACC said the dog, now named Riverside, had made it through the night and was eating and drinking.

The shelter continues to investigate the circumstances that led up to the dog being found. Anyone who recognizes the dog or has any information is asked to email Robert.Leinberger@rva.gov.

Anyone looking to donate to the dog's veterinary care can visit RACC's website.

It is illegal in Virginia to abandon or dump an animal, and doing so is a misdemeanor.
