Downed power line sparks field fire in Cumberland

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A downed power line sparked a fire in a field in Cumberland County on Sunday, burning through at least one acre and damaging both a house and a car.

At about 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, crews with the Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department were called to the 3000 block of Cumberland Road for report of a field fire.

When they arrived, firefighters found about one acre on fire and saw that the flames were spreading toward the nearby woods. They then found an abandoned house and a car that were both burning.

Additional units with the Randolph District Volunteer Fire Department & Ladies Auxillary, as well as the Virginia Department of Forestry, were called in to assist.

The fire was marked under control after about an hour, per fire officials. However, firefighters remained at the scene for an additional hour to both monitor and put out any hotspots.

The cause of the fire was determined to be a downed power line.
