Driver charged with DUI after speeding stop in Orange, authorities find open container
ORANGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A driver stopped for speeding is being charged with driving under the influence (DUI) in Orange County after authorities found an open container in his car on Wednesday evening.
At around 8:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1, an Orange County Sheriff's Office deputy stopped a blue Toyota SUV for going 81 mph in a 55 mph zone near the county's Wilderness Battlefield.
Investigators determined the driver, a 68-year-old Fredericksburg man, showed signs of impairment, including slurred speech, glassy and bloodshot eyes and unsteady balance.
The man allegedly admitted to drinking before driving, and the sheriff's office said they conducted field sobriety tests.
The driver was arrested for DUI, with authorities saying they found an open alcoholic beverage in the front cup holder. The sheriff's office added that they found multiple empty beer cans inside the vehicle.
He was charged with DUI and reckless driving by speed. Investigators said he was issued summonses for having an open container and refusing the breath test, and he was held on a $1,500 unsecured bond until sober.
