Drug related overdoses in Virginia dropped 40% in 2024
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- According to the Virginia Department of health (VDH), drug overdose related deaths dropped 40% in 2024.
The data derived in this study was gathered from death certificates from Virginia residents only, including residents who may have died out of state. Data presented from the Drug Overdose Deaths dashboard was the primary source drug overdose death counts and rates to the public, including the media.
In the year prior, 2023, drug overdose deaths in Virginia were at 2,463 compared to 2024, with 1,396 drug overdose related deaths.
According to charts and data gathered by the VDH, Fentanyl and other synthetic drugs has not been the drug most responsible for any drug related deaths as of 2024, but showcases that all drugs were--all drugs can fall under: 'Any Opioids or Psychostimulant.'
So far in 2025 Fentanyl and other synthetic drug deaths are at 29, Opiod deaths are at 35 and cocaine related deaths at 19.
