Emporia Police investigate human remains found near intersection

EMPORIA, Va. (WRIC) -- Emporia Police are conducting an investigation after human remains were found on Saturday, June 7.

At around 1:45 p.m. Emporia Police responded to a report of suspected human remains found in the area where Commonwealth Boulevard and Market Drive intersect.

According to police, both Officers and Detectives immediately secured the area and began to investigate the scene.

The identity of the remains have not been determined at this time, police are still unclear as to how long they have been in the area.

According to police, the remains will be taken to the Chief Medical Examiner's Office in Richmond, where they will investigate the remains further to help identify the individual and the cause of death.

The Emporia police department says they will work closely with the Richmond Medical Examiner's office to move the investigation forward.
