Emporia Police raise over $23,000 for Blue Christmas charity event this year

EMPORIA, Va. (WRIC) -- The Emporia Police Department had a record-breaking Blue Christmas with over $23,000 raised in donations.

On Saturday, Dec. 20, the Emporia Police Department posted on Facebook that their Blue Christmas event was the biggest one yet. More than $23,000 was raised to gift the local children and families in need with gifts, food, clothing and toys.

More than 140 children were shopped for and over 100 families were given meals from community members.

"This event is one of the largest community initiatives we do each year, but it’s also my favorite. It reflects who we are as a department and who this community is at its core. Even with a record-breaking year, we’re already planning and looking at ways to make it even better next year," said Troy Hawkins, Chief of Police in Emporia.
