Fallen tree damages homes and knocks out power in Richmond neighborhood

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The recovery efforts from Tuesday's winter storm are far from over for some Richmonders. Many people are still without power and some are also trapped in their neighborhood by a massive tree that has been blocking the road since Wednesday morning. "I got off from work and I came over here to assess what was going on. So, of course, when I came around the corner the first thing I saw was the big tree," said Loretta Curtis. The tree split right down the middle near the intersection of Evergreen Avenue and Deloak Avenue. Part of it landed directly on one house, while the other half fell across the road and into Curtis' home. Several neighbors have expressed their frustrations with the massive roadblock. The fallen tree has led to a number of problems for this neighborhood. The tree has not only knocked out power in the area, but it has also caused significant damage to the homes in its path. Other neighbors have voiced safety concerns with the tree blocking the only road in or out of the area. "Besides the lack of power, my overall concern is that, if there was some emergency, there's no way for emergency vehicles to pass the street," said Gina Barrett. Dominion Energy has assigned crews to the area to remedy this situation. Crews who were assessing the damage advised that the power had to be shut off before anyone could start the process of removing the tree. Curtis says she understands the road to recovery is going to be a long process since Dominion has been swamped with calls. "They can only work as fast as they can work. They're doing the best they can," Curtis said. "The fact that it happened during the day, that no one was home. The house we can replace, bodies you can't." Although Dominion is actively addressing the issue, they say replacing downed wires is time-consuming work. If you see a downed pole or wire, Dominion is warning people to stay at least 30 feet away and report it by calling 866-366-4357.
