Flights at RIC cancelled, delayed as snowstorm blankets Central Virginia

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — With another round of snow blanketing Central Virginia, the travel troubles didn't end on the roadways. Richmond International Airport (RIC) reported dozens of canceled and delayed flights on Wednesday due to winter weather. According to the flight tracking site, FlightAware, 25 flights were delayed and 23 more flights were cancelled as of 5:30 p.m. Some passengers tell me they were supposed to be flying out of Norfolk, but with cancellations there, they were rebooked for a flight out of Richmond. "You know, you can't control the weather, but at least they're trying to get us home and we'll see how this afternoon goes, because now we heard they're supposed to get quite a bit of weather here," said Mary Geck. Geck had been on vacation, visiting her grandkids. She was supposed to head home on a flight in the morning but experienced two flight cancelations at Norfolk International Airport. "Currently, our flight is now being delayed here for another hour, so we don't get out till this afternoon, if we're lucky," said Geck. RIC officials say they anticipated flight disruptions, and were already making preparations ahead of the storm. "Our snow teams... they work 12 hour shifts at the airport," said RIC's Spokesperson, Troy Bell. "They start before the snowstorm even arrives. You mostly have to worry about freezing... If we can prevent a lot of accumulation and stop the freezing, then we're good to go." According to Bell, various snow-response jobs are fulfilled by a number of people including direct airport employees, contractors, and airlines. Passengers are advised to monitor their flight status by checking their airlines website or app. Airport officials also recommend that people give themselves ample time to arrive at the airport, given the inclement weather and crowded parking garages.
