Fluffy ‘little hitchhiker’ takes 20-mile ride to Sussex school in engine compartment
SUSSEX COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A four-legged, whiskered "little hitchhiker" decided to take a 20-mile trip to a Sussex County school in the engine compartment of an unsuspecting driver's vehicle.
The morning of Friday, Sept. 26, units with Sussex County Animal Control were among many of the helping hands involved in a fascinating kitten rescue outside of Sussex County Elementary School.
"This little hitchhiker decided it would be fun to see how the elementary school was doing this morning, when [she] climbed inside this vehicle and rode 20 miles," animal officials said. "Inside the engine area!"

The rescue took multiple hours and quite the crowd, including units from local fire-rescue, as well as the county's sheriff's office and its Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.
"Then, she decided to climb down all by herself, where we nabbed her," animal officials said.
Sussex County Animal Control said it loved being able to work with so many other agencies to pull off this rescue. It also thanked the driver of the involved vehicle for being patient and trusting as units worked to free the kitten.
