Former VADOC correctional officer to serve less than a week in prison after assaulting Greensville inmate

GREENSVILLE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A now-former correctional officer at Greensville Correctional Center will serve less than a week behind bars after he assaulted an inmate in the fall of 2024.

According to court documents, Branden Joyner was one of three correctional officers with the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) who were charged with assault and battery of an inmate.

These charges were the result of two investigations of "use of force incidents" at the Greensville County Correctional Center, conducted by the VADOC’s Office of Law Enforcement Services (OLES). Those incidents, which occurred in November 2024, led to the hospitalization of two inmates.

Joyner was sentenced to six months with five months and 25 days suspended -- meaning he will spend about 5 days in prison, depending on how his sentence is calculated.

A VADOC spokesperson added that Joyner is no longer employed by the department.

Allan Johnson, one of the other two correctional officers who were also charged, had said charges dropped earlier this month.

These are not the only violent incidents at Greensville County Correctional Center that 8News has reported on in recent months. There were two stabbings in October 2024, involving both correctional officers and inmates.

8News also shared the troubling first-hand account of a man who served 10 months at the facility in 2023.
