Free Naloxone training sessions offered in Powhatan County

POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Free Naloxone trainings will be held on Wednesdays in Powhatan County through September, where attendees can learn the steps of recognizing and responding to an overdose.
Free Naloxone training sessions will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays through the end of September at Goochland-Powhatan Community Service's located at 3910 Old Buckingham Road in Powhatan County.
Naloxone is used to rapidly reverse an opioid overdose, and can quickly restore normal breathing if someone's breathing has slowed or stopped due to an opioid overdose.
The sessions are open to everyone, with no experience needed. According to organizers, attendees will learn:
- How to recognize an overdose
- How to safely administer Naloxone
- What to do after Narcan is given
- How to access other resources in the box
With new Naloxone boxes that have been installed at three locations within the community, the training is designed to assist residents in feeling more confident and prepared to respond in the event of an emergency. The new locations are:
- Human Services Building, located at 3908 Old Buckingham Rd.
- Deep Creek Volunteer Fire Department, located at 5631 Anderson Highway
- Huguenot Volunteer Fire Department, located at 1959 Urbine Rd.
The boxes, which are part of the county's new Mobile Outreach Program -- were reportedly funded through national opioid settlement funds through the Opioid Abatement Authority.
Boxes contain the following:
- Free Naloxone
- Hygeine kits
- First aid and wound care kits
- Drug test strips
- Harm reduction tools
- Recovery and support services information
