Gas leak shut down westbound lanes of Midlothian Turnpike in Chesterfield

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A construction crew hit a gas line at a Chesterfield County intersection Thursday morning, causing westbound lanes in that area to be shut down.

On Thursday, June 12, a spokesperson with Columbia Gas said a third-party contractor damaged the underground natural gas infrastructure in the intersection of Midlothian Turnpike and Alverser Drive.

Columbia Gas said that "repairs to the damaged infrastructure will be underway soon," and as of 12:15 p.m. Thursday, the gas has been shut off.

All westbound lanes of Midlothian Turnpike near the Alverser Drive intersection were closed until about 1 p.m. Thursday, according to a spokesperson with Chesterfield Fire and EMS.

"Drivers in the area should keep a safe distance between vehicles, reduce speed, obey flaggers and all posted signs," the Columbia Gas spokesperson said.
