Gifts, aid provided to over 230 Petersburg families through community partnerships

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- The Petersburg Sheriff's Office partnered with the Petersburg Kiwanis Club and Petersburg City Public Schools recently to help over 230 families and 400 children in need this holiday season.

Each year, as part of an annual holiday shopping initiative, the Kiwanis Club works with community partners and school staff to provide families and children with clothing, winter items and holiday gifts.

Additionally, deputies from the sheriff's office join Kiwanis club members and volunteers to shop for families as well. This year each family had an average of two to three children, but some had as many as eight.

"This partnership truly reflects the spirit of service in Petersburg," said Sheriff Vanessa R. Crawford. "Every year, we look forward to working with the Kiwanis Club and the school division to bring joy, relief, and support to our families. Shopping for over 400 children for items they wanted and needed is one of the most meaningful traditions we participate in."

Those involved with the event said it is made possible due to donations from the Kiwanis Club, community supporters and the partnership with Petersburg City Public Schools.
